A well-known Ephraim businessman, Robert (Bob) Pohl, has announced plans to publish a 2010 version of the Door County Go Guide™.

DOOR COUNTY, Wis., July 20, 2009—A well-known Ephraim businessman, Robert (Bob) Pohl, has announced plans to publish a 2010 version of the Door County Go Guide™. For nearly 20 years, Pohl was general manager of the Door Reminder “shopper” newspaper in Sister Bay.

Published annually by the Door County Chamber of Commerce from the early 1990s through 2006, the original Go Guide was a comprehensive directory of Door County businesses that cater to the tourist trade. Most local motels, restaurants, shops and recreational activities were advertisers in the free publication, distributed in Door County and at rest stops throughout Wisconsin. In its heyday, over 200,000 copies of the Go Guide were printed and distributed each year.

The Go Guide concept was devised when Bob Hastings, managing director of the Chamber of Commerce, saw a similar publication while on vacation, and brought the idea back to Door County. “Bob Hastings was very smart about the marketing of this area,” said Bob Pohl. “The Go Guide was the first Door County publication that listed almost all of the businesses and fit neatly into your pocket or purse. It was a huge success from the first issue.”

The Chamber ceased Go Guide publication in 2006. Bob Pohl convinced his then-employer, Gannett Corporation, to begin publishing a similar publication, Go Door County, which has been published annually from 2007 to the present.

Pohl said the new Go Guide has many of the same marketing goals as its earlier incarnation, but will offer significant new benefits to advertisers.
“The vision for the original Go Guide was for a publication that was cost-effective to its advertisers, distributed in mass quantities, and aimed directly at the needs of Door County visitors,” Pohl said recently.

Pohl said the new Go Guide will be more economical and cost-effective than other marketing options available to local businesses. “I’d like to return to the Go Guide’s glory years,” said Pohl, “when it was forward-looking and unique and offered advertisers the best value. And, since everyone involved in this project is a local resident and/or business, the revenue benefits the local economy. Ultimately, our goal is to create a publication with a unique Door County look and feel.”
